MACAO — The world’s casino capital is set to choose its next top leader, yet there is little buzz about the imminent election for Macao’s highest office. After all, there is only one candidate on the ballot, and the system allows just a handful of people to participate in the process.
“For ordinary folks in Macao, the chief executive election has always been a show to watch only,” Au Kam-san, a retired pro-democracy legislator, told Nikkei Asia. “There is no universal suffrage, where we’re not voting and we’re not the one who nominated the candidate.”
