Today in Paris, Japanese designer Soshi Otsuki and his drapey suiting took the 2025 LVMH Prize for Young Fashion Designers. In addition, London-based Steve O Smith received the Karl Lagerfeld Prize and British-Nigerian-Brazilian Torishéju Dumi of Torishéju won the Savoir-Faire Prize. The latter follows the announcement of Rachel Scott’s appointment as the new creative director of Proenza Schouler, signaling an exciting week for female designers.
Launched in 2015, Otsuki’s namesake brand Soshiotsuki reimagines the menswear tailoring codes set in place decades prior by Giorgio Armani, mingling Japanese and Western influences with subtly incongruous details. The other two winners champion a more obvious flourish, though in very singular ways. Smith uses a process of fabric appliqué to turn his drawings into wearable garments while Dumi reimagines antique themes like petticoats, bloomers and coattails through a distinctly modern lens.
Winners were selected from a cohort of eight finalists by a jury including Phoebe Philo, Pharrell Williams, Stella McCartney, Jonathan Anderson, and Sarah Burton. LVMH launched the LVMH Prize for Young Fashion Designers in 2013 to nurture a new generation of creative talent. The winner of the LVMH Prize receives a 400,000-euro endowment and enjoys a tailored mentorship by LVMH. The winners of the Karl Lagerfeld and Savoir-Faire Prizes receive 200,000 euro-allocation and a one-year LVMH mentorship. Starting this year, Pascale Lepoivre, CEO of Loewe, will mentor the winners.
