leicester riots: Tory MP slams official UK report blaming Hindu extremists for Leicester riots, demands public presentation

UK MP Bob Blackman, who represents Tory, recently raised in the British Parliament an official report that tied local Hindu ‘extremists’ to the communal unrest that rocked Leicester in 2022. Excerpts from the controversial report were published on Sunday by the Daily Mail. Taking strong exception to the report, both in the parliament and on social media, Blackman demanded that the findings be made public so that they can be scrutinised and the “blame is put where it should be”. He also pointed out the difference in the scale of damages suffered on the two sides during the Hindu-Muslim riots.

Leicester riots: Bob Blackman slams report blaming Hindus

“I raised the NPCC‘s report which blamed Hindu extremism for the Leicester riots in 2022. This is despite the fact that; 105 Hindu homes were attacked, 0 Muslim homes. 2 Hindu temples were attacked, 0 Mosques. I asked the Government to release the full report so we can scrutinise it,” the Conservative MP posted on X on Monday, March 31.

Confusion over report’s origin

Though the “secret” report is widely being attributed to the NPCC by various quarters, including the Daily Mail itself, its origin is now disputed. The Times of India said on Wednesday that it was informed by the NPCC that the contentious report in question was “not an NPCC report”. “You would need to contact counter-terrorism policing as this is not an NPCC report,” an NPCC spokesperson told TOI. When the outlet approached the counter-terrorism policing, the unit declined to comment on ‘what may or may not be leaked documents’.

Here’s what the Leicester riots report says

Coming back to the matter in hand, the official report at the center of the controversy purportedly claims that extremist sections of the British Hindu population are entering into alliances with European far-right outfits over their “common hatred” of Muslims. The unreleased report, as per the Daily Mail, also claims that British far-right activist Tommy Robinson met with certain Hindu outfits to promote a campaign targeted at Muslims.
