The national paper worked with author Phil Mellows to curate the list to coincide with the publication of his new book ‘Beer Breaks in Britain: 30 Places to Explore and Drink Good Beer’.

Included in the top 10 was The Farmers Arms, a community-owned establishment found in Lowick Green.

Bar Manager Murray Murray, from Askam, said: “It’s fantastic to have the recognition for our community and regulars who believed in and supported the project so much from the get go and for our staff and volunteers who work hard to make the place so magical.

“Hopefully, it will put the word out to more people who have not discovered the inn and its lovely views and gardens.”

The acquisition of the historic institution was initiated by the local community who succeeded in mobilising a campaign to save the pub at the height of the first Covid-19 lockdown.

The present redevelopment is led by locally-based arts organisation Grizedale Arts, following a fundraising campaign that attracted community investors and donors from all over the world.

Murray added: “We are an ever-evolving country pub bought with the local community and we think that community investment – emotional and literal – is what really makes the place.

“We also have a great bar team, who bring such enthusiasm to the Inn, new ideas and a listening ear to regulars, who we get great feedback and guidance from.”

The pub is constantly looking to support the local economy, working with nearby businesses to create a regional supply chain and with local musicians to provide entertainment for the area.

From August, a refrigerated vending machine will also be introduced, acting as a 24/7 farmers market that growers in the area can get involved with.

“As well as prioritising locally sourced produce from other suppliers, we have also developed a kitchen garden to ensure fresh seasonal produce in our kitchen and our bar,” said Murray.

“A business benefit for us is a benefit for others locally and it’s really important to us as a community-invested inn that we have that impact.”
