With 23 appearances in “best spots” lists and over 32,000 annual Google searches for “wild camping Lake District,” the region continues to be a firm favourite for outdoor enthusiasts.

Although it records higher autumn rainfall (155mm) than many competitors, its world-famous scenery and remote fells help it stand out as one of the country’s most atmospheric places to camp.
The Lake District sits just behind regions such as Dartmoor, the Peak District, and the Brecon Beacons in the national rankings.
From the quiet shores of Ennerdale Water to the dramatic slopes of Great Gable, the region offers some of the most rewarding wild camping experiences in Britain.
Wild camping remains a largely unofficial activity within the National Park, with campers urged to follow the “leave no trace” principles.
Ethan Moreland, author and wild camping enthusiast at Blacks, said: “Wild camping is one of the most rewarding ways to experience the outdoors, but in autumn and winter it should only be attempted by experienced campers.
“Always camp discreetly, arrive late, leave early, and take everything home with you.”
Blacks also advises campers to pack cold-weather essentials, including a four-season sleeping bag, waterproof layers, walking boots, and a first-aid kit, as conditions can change rapidly across the fells.
