FRANKFORT, Ky. — The Kentucky Department of Education is offering its Summer Food Service Program, also known as Sun Meals.
The KDE said the program provides meals at no cost from late May through August to children 18 and under in low-income areas, partnering with school districts and community organizations to offer nutritious food with recreational fun and educational activities. More than 2,000 sites will serve meals to Kentucky children.
With more awareness and participation in the program, the KDE said the number of Summer Food Service Program meals and meal sites has increased annually. In rural areas, meals may be available for multiple days and provided “to go” for children, parents or guardians.
Site locations and meal service times vary across the state, the KDE said. The department encourages parents and guardians to visit the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Summer Meals for Kids Site Finder or call the USDA Hunger Hotline at 866-348-6479 for more information about meal sites, distribution days and whether meals are eaten on site or available to go.
The Summer Food Service Program is part of a federally funded initiative operated by the USDA.
