WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – Several hikers had to be rescued at a southeast Kansas lake this weekend due to heat-related illnesses.

Kansas Game Wardens said the rescues happened Saturday on the Elk River Hiking Trail at Elk City Lake northwest of Independence.

The trail runs for 15 miles and is known for its rugged terrain and remote location.

Game Wardens say on warm days it is impossible to carry the amount of water required to survive if hiking the entire length of trail.

They add that multiple rescues happen each year and it often takes over an hour for rescue crews to reach a hiker’s location due to terrain, remote location and lack of cellphone service.
