16th March 2025 – (Hong Kong) Participants in the inaugural “Kai Tak Run” praised the stunning seaside scenery and state-of-the-art facilities as Hong Kong’s Kai Tak Sports Park hosted its first-ever Kai Tak Run 2025 on Sunday, attracting approximately 3,200 runners. The event, organised by Leap Through Kai Tak and co-hosted by the sports park, featured three- and five-kilometre races that began and ended at the Kai Tak Youth Sports Ground.
The carefully designed route took runners past key landmarks, including the Kai Tak Arena, the central square, and North Star Garden, a recreational hub. Participants were also treated to views of Victoria Harbour and the park’s festive spaces, creating a unique blend of athleticism and sightseeing.
Lawmaker Benson Luk, representing the Election Committee constituency in the Legislative Council, also participated in the event along with runners, colleagues, and community partners. Luk highlighted the potential of running events to drive economic growth, referring to the emerging “running economy” in Hong Kong. “With a well-established ecosystem comprising event organisers, sponsors, participants, sports merchandise, and sports medicine, running has become an industry in itself,” he said. Luk also advocated for positioning Hong Kong as a “running paradise” for international visitors, suggesting marketing efforts to attract tourists to unique races and boost overnight stays. He pointed to the Hong Kong Marathon’s success, where 20% of participants were international runners, as evidence of the city’s appeal as a global running destination.
Lawmaker Perry Yiu from the tourism sector emphasised the park’s potential to combine sports and culture. He proposed integrating the park’s events with initiatives like the “City Heritage Run,” which encourages participants to explore Hong Kong’s historical landmarks. “This could boost tourism and stimulate local consumption,” Yiu added.
The event opened with remarks from John Sharkey, CEO of Kai Tak Sports Park, who encouraged participants to enjoy the park’s picturesque surroundings. Tang King-shing, the park’s director of strategic planning, and several lawmakers joined runners in the 3km race. Sharkey also confirmed that preparations for the upcoming Hong Kong Sevens rugby tournament are well underway.
