Jones County “Celebrities” take on Granny Basketball team in fundraiser

Anamosa, Iowa (KCRG) – The Jones County “Celebrities” a team made up of everyone from the Monticello Police Chief and a Jones County Supervisor to a farmer, pastor, and high school students took on the local Granny Basketball team the Grant Wood Gothics to raise money for the Jones County Safe & Healthy Youth Coalition.

The money will go towards helping pay for trips for kids in the coalition.

Jennifer Husmann, the project coordinator with the Coalition said “It does go towards our work we do hope to take kids to a conference this summer but its kind of iffy right now with all the governmental changes so we’re not sure if it’s gonna be held but we do take them to Des Moines for Day on the Hill.

Along with goodwill donations the event also featured some inventive ways to raise money for the coalition.

Conti Roberts a center for the Grant Wood Gothics said “When we play local Jones County officials… we make them play with an oven mitt on their dominant hand, they have to play by our rules… and we have a jail that if they run they get put in jail and that money all goes towards the coalition so it’s a fun way to raise money for the benefit.”

Players on the Grant Wood Gothics also made and auctioned off two quilts at the fundraiser.

Proceeds from one went to the Jones County Safe & Healthy Youth Coalition, while the other went to helping fund the team’s trip to the 2025 National Granny Basketball Tournament in Fort Worth, Texas.
