Ivan Toney recalled to England squad for first time since Euro 2024

Ivan Toney has been recalled to the England squad for the first time since the 2024 European Championship.

The former Brentford forward has been rewarded by Thomas Tuchel for an impressive first season for Saudi Pro League club Al Ahli, where he was part of the side that won the Asian Champions League earlier this month.

The 29-year-old has scored 29 goals in 43 appearances in all competitions since making the switch to Saudi Arabia in August of last year.

England travel to Barcelona to face Andorra in a World Cup qualifier on June 7 before welcoming Senegal to the City Ground for a friendly on June 10.

The squad will head to Spain early and plan to attend the Spanish Formula 1 Grand Prix on June 1 before the first of the two fixtures.

Toney previously enjoyed a hugely successful spell with Brentford, scoring 72 goals in 141 appearances in helping them earn promotion to the Premier League before establishing themselves as a top-flight side.

He served an eight-month ban for breaching Football Association betting rules before returning in January 2024 and finishing the 2023-24 season with four goals in 17 league outings.

Toney has six England caps to date after making his debut for the national team in March 2023. He was part of Gareth Southgate’s squad for Euro 2024 and assisted Harry Kane’s extra-time winning goal in the round of 16 victory over Slovakia.

Elsewhere, there is a first senior call-up for Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah. The 25-year-old has represented England up to under-21 level and has made 32 appearances in all competitions this season.

Nottingham Forest midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White has been selected, having been a late call-up to Tuchel’s first squad in March, and Atletico Madrid’s Conor Gallagher also returns.

Phil Foden, Marc Guehi, Jarrod Bowen, Aaron Rasmdale, Jarrell Quansah, and Tino Livramento drop out from Tuchel’s March squad. Rashford is sidelined with a hamstring injury, while Guehi has been ruled out of Palace’s final matches of the season with a head injury.
