Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) UK, the industry association for transport technology, will be launching a new ‘partner’ membership tier in September to allow local authorities to join the organization without paying a membership fee.
This new membership will give some, but not all, of the benefits of ITS UK membership in return for the organization’s participation with the sector.
Partner members will be offered access to events and the ability to receive ITS UK communications, allowing them to meet and network with members and find out the latest insights in the sector.
In return, they will be asked to demonstrate how they have supported the ITS sector over their membership year – with clear examples like hosting events, speaking engagements or support for ITS UK activities.
Partner members will, however, not receive the full benefits of membership, such as the ability to influence the direction of the organization, vote or stand on the Board, run as forum officers or take part in ITS UK’s policy and advocacy activity. For those public sector organizations wishing to receive these benefits, paid membership will remain available, at both the standard and (premier) executive level.
“ITS UK has seen considerable growth over the past few years, with some 190 organisations now in membership. Yet, for many local authorities, facing a tough fiscal environment, a membership subscription has been a major barrier to involvement with the community,” says Max Sugarman, ITS UK chief executive.
“So, that is why – from September – ITS UK will be inviting more local authorities to get involved without asking them to pay a membership fee. Instead, they will be invited into membership in return for demonstrating their support as part of the organization. Our new Partner offer will provide them with a number of member benefits – allowing them to attend events and hear the latest developments in the sector – in exchange for reciprocal support, like hosting events or speaking opportunities.
“Crucially, ITS UK is and will remain a home for both the public and private sector, with full membership remaining an option for all public sector bodies. Our Public Sector members are vital in ensuring ITS UK represents the whole industry, and their continued representation on our Board and Forums will help guide and shape the future direction of the association.”
“We believe this change is much needed and will provide a major benefit to both current members and local authorities looking to participate with the industry. Doors will open for Partner members in September – and we hope many will get involved, helping us support a growing, vibrant transport technology sector.”
