Hurricane Milton debris pickup began Monday for much of the Treasure Coast.
Martin, St. Lucie and Indian River counties and the municipalities within them did not specify how long the cleanup effort will take, but they provided these instructions on how to best prepare debris for pickup.
Note: Waste Management will not pick up storm debris, unless customers pay for a special bulk pickup, so counties are hiring private contractors to clean up areas typically served by that company. However, Waste Management will continue to pick up yard debris and household garbage.
Sort storm debris for pickup
Do not mix storm debris with regular yard debris or regular household garbage, especially not electronics and hazardous household waste. Separate storm debris like this:
- Vegetation: Foliage; felled trees, branches and limbs; and other organic debris. Do not bag them. Cut felled trees and large branches into manageable pieces.
- Building materials: Includes wood, bricks, concrete, asphalt, shingles, plaster, glass, cabinets, doors, windows, counters, lumber, roofing, tile
- Household furnishings: Includes furniture, mattresses, carpet, drywall, PVC, pressure-treated wood
- Appliances: Air conditioners, dishwashers, freezers, refrigerators, stoves, washers, dryers, water heaters
- Electronics: Includes TVs, computers and phones
Place debris piles at the curb
- Place debris piles in the right-of-way closest to the curb — not on your property, in driveways or on sidewalks.
- Do not block the roadway or storm drains.
- Do not place piles under trees or power lines or near poles, utility boxes, fire hydrants, mailboxes or other structures that can delay removal.
- Only the Martin County website specifies the size of the piles, which should be less than 5 inches in diameter, less than 6 feet in length, and weigh less than 50 pounds per item.

Indian River County debris pickup
Debris pickup in the cities started Monday, but unincorporated county residents’ debris won’t start being collected until Oct. 21, according to the Indian River County Commission website.
The landfill has waived tipping fees for storm debris through Oct. 18.
Waste Management will collect up to 4 cubic yards of typical yard waste — but not storm debris — in Fellsmere, Sebastian and the unincorporated county.
Waste Management resumed garbage collection Friday, but it will be delayed by one day through the end of this week for residential, commercial and roll-off customers. Friday customers will be serviced on Monday.
St. Lucie County debris pickup
Debris pickup in the cities of Fort Pierce and Port St. Lucie started Monday, but St. Lucie County is still hiring outside contractors for the unincorporated areas.
“We’ll announce those pickup dates once they have been established. We will make at least two passes throughout the county,” the county said in a social media post.
Bring electronics and hazardous household waste to the St. Lucie County Baling & Recycling Facility at 6120 Glades Cut-Off Road in Fort Pierce.
Martin County debris pickup
Martin County’s Public Works Department is in charge of storm debris removal.
Residential vegetative yard waste for all customers is collected each Wednesday.
Waste Management has resumed regular trash pickup, with services delayed by one day for residential customers in Martin County. Thursday customers will be serviced on Monday.
Debris pickup for private communities
Certain condos, private subdivisions and other properties with private roads must submit a right-of-entry form every year to allow pickup; however, it doesn’t guarantee the county or its private contractor will pick up your storm debris.
