Hong Kong Caustic Soda Imports
In 2024, the amount of caustic soda imported into Hong Kong declined to 7.8K tons, which is down by -4.8% against the year before. In general, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2023 when imports increased by 24% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at 9.8K tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2024, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, caustic soda imports reduced notably to $3.4M (IndexBox estimates) in 2024. Overall, total imports indicated mild growth from 2014 to 2024: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 56% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $4.6M in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2024, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2024, China (4.2K tons) constituted the largest caustic soda supplier to Hong Kong, accounting for a 53% share of total imports. Moreover, caustic soda imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Taiwan (Chinese) (1.2K tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Japan (1K tons), with a 13% share.
From 2014 to 2024, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China stood at -3.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Taiwan (Chinese) (-6.2% per year) and Japan (+16.3% per year).
In value terms, China ($1M), Japan ($773K) and Taiwan (Chinese) ($756K) were the largest caustic soda suppliers to Hong Kong, with a combined 76% share of total imports. Thailand, the United States and Malaysia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 7.3%.
Among the main suppliers, Thailand, with a CAGR of +26.7%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Caustic soda in aqueous solution (soda lye) (4.6K tons) and caustic soda in the solid form (3.2K tons) were the main products of caustic soda imports to Hong Kong.
From 2014 to 2024, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the major product types, was attained by caustic soda in aqueous solution (soda lye) (with a CAGR of +0.9%).
In value terms, caustic soda with the largest imports in Hong Kong were caustic soda in the solid form ($2.2M) and caustic soda in aqueous solution (soda lye) ($1.2M).
Import Prices by Country
In 2024, the caustic soda price amounted to $428 per ton (CIF, Hong Kong), waning by -11% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2022 an increase of 40% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $586 per ton. From 2023 to 2024, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Thailand ($773 per ton), while the price for China ($240 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
