Hong Kong’s Democratic Party a step closer to disbanding, final vote in coming months

Hong Kong’s Democratic Party, once a powerful opposition force in the city’s political landscape, is a step closer to disbanding after nearly all of the members attending an extraordinary meeting authorised the leadership to go ahead with the plan.

Chairman Lo Kin-hei said on Sunday that more than 110 people attended the 1½-hour meeting, with some also representing other members.

Over 90 per cent endorsed the proposal for the party’s central committee to “proceed with the arrangements and follow-up of the dissolution”.

The move puts the 30-year-old party one step closer to disbanding.

“This is not the final decision that the party is dissolving. But, in the coming few months, I hope there will be another general meeting [in which] we will get that motion into debate and vote,” he said.

He said he could not guarantee the party would be able to stick to the timeline, but he expected that more members would be able to attend the next meeting and many would vote in favour of the disbandment.
