Hong Kong’s stock market is preparing to welcome some of Thailand’s largest corporations for secondary listings, enhancing investment opportunities for global investors. South China Morning Post reports that the Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing (HKEX) has recognized the Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) on its approved list of global exchanges. This initiative provides Thai firms, including major players like state oil and gas company PTT and conglomerate CP All, with the platform to tap into a broader investment network.
According to data from IndexBox, Thailand’s stock market is a robust entity with 636 main board listed companies and an additional 222 smaller-capitalized firms on its Market for Alternative Investment. As of June 2024, the market boasted a capitalization of US$559 billion, positioning it as the third largest in Southeast Asia, following Indonesia and Singapore, and 25th worldwide according to the World Bank.
Katherine Ng, HKEX’s head of listing, highlighted the diverse sectors represented on the SET, which include energy, healthcare, and technology. These sectors showcase the dynamism of the Thai economy and the potential for growth and innovation in Hong Kong’s already thriving market. The facilitation of cross-listings is anticipated to bolster HKEX’s market offerings and sustain its status as Asia’s premier financial hub.
