Nepali citizens who plan to transit through the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) must apply for a Transit Visa or Entry Permit before traveling, as Nepal is not included in Hong Kong’s visa waiver list. The Immigration Department of Hong Kong allows travelers to submit their transit visa applications online, through an official web portal. This service is strictly for transit or short visits and cannot be used to extend a stay or convert into another visa type once in Hong Kong.
An application for a transit visa may be favorably considered if the applicant’s bona fides are not in doubt, they have sufficient funds to cover their stay without employment, and they possess a confirmed onward air ticket to their final destination outside Hong Kong. Travelers transiting to Mainland China or Macao must also hold a valid visa for those destinations.
Although optional, it is highly recommended to have a local sponsor (either an individual or company) in Hong Kong. The sponsor must be at least 18 years old and a bona fide resident. Having a sponsor can help the Immigration Department process the application faster.
Documents Required for Transit Visa Application:
-
Valid passport (minimum 6 months’ validity)
-
Passport-size photograph (recent)
-
Completed application form ID 1003A (and ID 1003B for local sponsor if applicable)
-
Onward or return flight ticket
-
Financial proof such as bank statements or income certificate
-
Hotel booking or accommodation details
-
Travel itinerary and visa for the next destination (if applicable)
All documents must be uploaded in JPEG, PDF, GIF, PNG, or TIF format (up to 5 MB).
Processing and Online Submission:
Applications are processed within four weeks after submission of all required documents. Applicants receive an acknowledgement email within 7 working days. If no update is received within 10 working days, they can contact the Immigration Department at (+852) 2824 6111 or [email protected].
Once approved, the applicant receives an email notification with a payment link. The visa fee (around HK$230–250) can be paid via GovHK, FPS, PPS, or credit card. After payment, the e-Visa can be instantly downloaded or printed on A4 paper. Upon arrival in Hong Kong, travelers must present their passport and e-Visa (printed or digital) at immigration for scanning.
Offline applications can also be made via post or through Chinese Embassies/Consulates, but online processing is faster and more convenient.
