Hong Kong to record coldest winter day on Sunday as temperatures hit 9 degrees

Hong Kong is set to record its coldest day of this winter on Sunday, with the Observatory forecasting temperatures will fall to a low of 9 degrees Celsius [48.2 Fahrenheit] under the influence of an intense monsoon.

The coldest day recorded so far this winter was January 12, when the mercury fell to 11 degrees or lower.

The Observatory also issued a warning on Saturday morning as the minimum temperature reached 11 degrees, despite the weather remaining relatively dry and sunny.

The forecaster earlier told residents to brace for very cold weather across the New Territories on Saturday and Sunday morning, with temperatures at elevated spots to reach close to freezing point.

It also issued a red-level fire danger warning on Saturday morning. The signal means there is an extremely high risk of fire hazards.

Over at Sheung Shui on Saturday, temperatures fell to 9.4 degrees. The mercury also dipped to 9.7 and 9.9 degrees in Lau Fau Shan and Clear Water Bay, respectively.
