Hong Kong’s weather forecaster will issue the No 3 typhoon warning signal between midnight on Saturday and 3am on Sunday, with strong winds expected to affect the vicinity of the Pearl River Delta and enter within 200km (125 miles) of the city next week.
A tropical cyclone over the northern part of the South China Sea would intensify gradually and edge closer to the western coast of Guangdong, the Observatory said on Saturday.
It raised the No 1 signal at 10.20pm on Friday and said it would remain in force most of Saturday. The weather system was expected to stay about 500km or more away from the city during the day, it added.
The storm had moved west-northwest steadily with its outer rainbands also edging closer to the coast of Guangdong, the Observatory said on Saturday afternoon.
“The tropical cyclone will intensify progressively and skirt around 200km to the southwest of Hong Kong on Monday morning,” it said.
