Hong Kong police have arrested four mainland Chinese linked to a burglary gang from Guangxi autonomous region on suspicion of stealing jewellery and cash worth HK$375,000 (US$48,200) from luxury residences between January and April.
Lam King-nin, a senior inspector from the Western district crime squad, said on Friday the suspects, who entered the city illegally via land in late January, were responsible for five burglaries in Pok Fu Lam, Sai Kung, Tung Chung and Ma Wan.
They allegedly stole jewellery, watches and cash worth HK$375,000.
Police checked surveillance camera footage at luxury homes in Pok Fu Lam to help identify the suspects.
The four were arrested in a flat on Yuen Long’s Sau Fu Street, where police recovered jewellery worth HK$80,000 and HK$45,000 in cash, on Thursday at 11am. Officers also found handsaws, screwdrivers and pliers.
The suspects, aged between 30 and 42, were allegedly members of a rural gang operating in Guangxi and who shared the same family name, Wei.
