Hong Kong opens southbound travel scheme for Guangdong cars

It will initially cover vehicles from Guangzhou, Zhuhai, Zhongshan and Jiangmen.

Hong Kong announced that applications for the Southbound Travel Scheme for Guangdong vehicles will open on 9 December, with approved vehicles allowed to enter Hong Kong from 23 December.

The scheme will initially cover vehicles from Guangzhou, Zhuhai, Zhongshan and Jiangmen, with plans to expand to other Guangdong cities after six months.

Chief Executive John Lee thanked the central and Guangdong governments for supporting the scheme, describing it as a key measure to strengthen integration within the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA).

Under the scheme, up to 100 private cars from Guangdong will be allowed to enter Hong Kong daily via the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge for stays of up to three days.

Applicants must first enter a computer ballot before submitting their applications.

Designated drivers must hold valid Hong Kong driving licences, whilst vehicles must pass Hong Kong inspections and secure third-party risk insurance.

Approved vehicles may use the Airport Authority Hong Kong’s (AAHK) new “Park & Fly” automated carpark on the artificial island of the Hong Kong Port.

The facility, which opens on 15 November, offers 1,800 24-hour parking spaces and enables travellers to transfer to flights through a bonded bus service to the SkyPier Terminal without going through Hong Kong immigration.

Hong Kong said the scheme aims to improve the flow of people and goods between Hong Kong and Guangdong, bringing new opportunities to Hong Kong’s tourism, retail and catering sectors.
