Hong Kong may issue T1 warning between Thursday and Friday as cyclone Trami edges closer

The Hong Kong Observatory is expected to issue the No 1 standby signal between Thursday and Friday as Tropical Cyclone Trami gradually intensifies and edges closer to the city.

The forecaster said on Tuesday that the tropical cyclone to the east of the Philippines will enter within 800km of Hong Kong later on Thursday to early Friday.

“The Observatory will then issue the Standby Signal No 1,” it said.

Trami is forecast to move west in the general direction to the vicinity of Hainan Island, while a replenishment of the northeast monsoon will reach southern China towards the weekend, according to the Observatory.

Under the combined effect of Trami and the northeast monsoon, it is expected to be windy and become cloudy with a few showers over the coast of southern China later on Friday and over the weekend.

“Depending on the movement of Trami and the change in local wind conditions, the Observatory will assess the need for issuing the Strong Wind Signal No 3,” it said.
