A Hong Kong father, previously sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of his three-year-old daughter by shaking her to death in 2020, has filed an appeal against his conviction.
A document made available at the High Court on Tuesday revealed that Lau Kai-ping, 42, had submitted an appeal against his conviction for one count of murder.
The jury in March unanimously found him guilty of killing Leung Nga-sze in July 2020 in their Sham Shui Po flat.
During the month-long trial, the court heard that Lau told paramedics who arrived at the scene that the girl had “slipped”.
However, hospital doctors discovered signs of bleeding beneath the girl’s skull and in her retinas, along with old bruises on her inner thighs. The unusual injuries led them to suspect child abuse.
The girl died on July 29. Medical experts had concluded Nga-sze’s injuries were highly characteristic of shaken baby syndrome, which results from violently shaking a child.
