Hong Kong doctor who died in alleged E coli cluster hailed as ‘good role model’

The deceased doctor who was part of a suspected Shiga toxin-producing E coli cluster in a Hong Kong public hospital was described as “a good role model” for colleagues and “willing to go the extra mile” to help patients, according to people familiar with him.

The doctor, whose name was not revealed by the authorities, died last Friday, one day after he was admitted to Princess Margaret Hospital for signs of severe infection, low blood oxygen levels and high fever. He also had symptoms of diarrhoea.

The deceased, who was in his thirties, was among the three oncologists from the hospital in Kwai Chung who fell sick. The other two doctors had milder symptoms and at least one had been discharged.

A memorial corner for the late doctor has been set up in Princess Margaret Hospital since Tuesday and will run until Sunday for people to pay tribute.

People who knew the doctor and spoke to the Post on the condition of anonymity spoke highly of him, both at and outside work.

“He is a good role model to our new doctors, and he often shares his knowledge during spare time with young staff,” a colleague of the doctor said. “He is really a good doctor.”

That hospital staff, who declined to be named, described the death of that doctor as a “huge loss” to all of them.
