Hong Kong cycling confident of being chosen as a host of new Track World Cup event

Hong Kong’s top cycling official said the city was working on a bid to host several international track tournaments over the next two years.

Leung Hung-tak, chairman of the Cycling Association of Hong Kong, China, said his organisation was working with the world governing body, the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI), on the return of world-class competition to the city’s velodrome.

And with the city having previously staged UCI events, Leung said he was confident Hong Kong would be chosen even if there were competing applications.

“Hong Kong still has an advantage because our previous tournaments have given them [UCI] confidence,” he said.

Hong Kong has hosted the Track Cycling World Cup three times – in 2016 and twice in 2019 – the Track Cycling Nations Cup in 2021 and 2024, as well as the UCI Track Cycling World Championships in 2017.

Last month, the sport’s world governing body confirmed their plans to end the four-year-old UCI Track Champions League, which was launched in 2021, and take steps to revitalise the UCI Track Nations Cup.
