Hong Kong is in the “unfortunate” position of being caught in the crossfire of US President Donald Trump’s tariff policies, the American Chamber of Commerce in the city has said.
The influential business group said on Monday that it supported the Hong Kong government’s stance that the city was a separate customs entity distinct from mainland China, its first comments since the announcement of the “reciprocal” tariffs rattled global markets.
The position contrasts with Trump’s previous move to end the city’s preferential trading status and instead treat it the same as the mainland. Tariffs slapped on Chinese goods also apply to those from the city.
AmCham said Hong Kong found itself wedged between two economic superpowers.
“The recent US trade policy decisions and worldwide reactions have had great ramifications on the global economy,” the 2,000-member chamber said.
“Hong Kong, a long-time supporter of free economy and trade, is caught in the middle.”
