Hong Kong breaks record with late-year ‘very hot weather’ warning

Hong Kong on Saturday recorded an unusually late “very hot weather” warning for the time of the year that broke the city’s past record in 2017, with the mercury reaching as high as 33.6 degrees Celsius (92.48 Fahrenheit).

The Observatory clocked temperatures of up to 33.6 degrees until 12.30pm. The record was last broken seven years ago when the city logged a maximum temperature of 32.7 degrees on October 12.

The city has typically cooled down towards the end of the year but has witnessed a spate of high-heat days around this time of year since 2021.

Hong Kong in October of last year recorded three very hot days – where the daily maximum temperature hit 33 degrees or above – compared with two in 2022 and only one in 2021.

The forecaster on Saturday also reminded the public to take precautions against heat stroke.

The Observatory said a strong easterly airstream would affect the coast of Guangdong in the next couple of days, with a dry northeast monsoon expecting to reach southern China on Tuesday.
