Hong Kong is increasingly pivotal in the internationalisation of the yuan, bolstered by expanding liquidity and diversified applications for the currency. According to reports, the city has cemented its status as the world’s largest offshore yuan hub, offering an extensive liquidity pool, and maintaining dominant positions in both the foreign-exchange and over-the-counter interest-rate derivatives markets.
Data from IndexBox highlights that yuan deposits in Hong Kong reached an impressive 1.1 trillion yuan (US$151 billion) by the end of last year. This significant pool not only supports a variety of global offshore transactions but also promotes broader financial activities, reinforcing Hong Kong’s pivotal role as an international financial centre.
Joseph Chan Ho-lim, Under Secretary for Financial Services and the Treasury, remarked at a recent Bank of China (Hong Kong) forum that continued collaboration with Beijing, evidenced through consistent policy measures and bond issuances, has significantly fueled the city’s offshore yuan liquidity. Notably, the Ministry of Finance has been issuing offshore yuan bonds in Hong Kong for 17 consecutive years, accumulating a total of 366 billion yuan by last year. Further cementing this trend, an additional 12.5 billion yuan in debt is slated for issuance, spread across various tenors from two to thirty years.
