La Liga eyes first ever official match in the United States
Spanish football could witness landmark moment as La Liga’s pushing to stage the Villarreal vs Barcelona clash outside of Spain in Miami, USA.
According to Catalan daily Mundo Deportivo, the league’s formally requested approval from the Royal Spanish Football Federation RFEF to relocate the Matchday 17 fixture to Hard Rock Stadium, home of Inter Miami where Barca legend Lionel Messi now plays.
The RFEF’s expected to deliver its verdict on Monday. If approved, the matter will be escalated to UEFA whose consent is also required for any official fixture to be held outside Europe.
Per FIFA rules, hosting official domestic match abroad requires:
Originally set for Estadio de la Ceramica on 20 Dec 2025, the game’s part of the 2025 /26 La Liga season. If moved it’ll mark the 1st time in history that an official Spanish league match takes place in the United States.
