What is U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz most thankful for? What is the recipe for U.S. Rep. Michael McCaul’s wife Linda’s Thanksgiving jambalaya? Which congressman brought $73 million in federal money back to his district?
This Thanksgiving, the American-Statesman asked members of Congress who represent Austin-area residents about their favorite dishes and what they’re grateful for, both in the places they represent and in their personal lives. We also asked them for their favorite Thanksgiving recipes, if they wanted to share them.
Here are their responses:
U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas

Favorite Thanksgiving dish: Turkey and stuffing

What is another thing you’re thankful for that happened in your life this year?
My two daughters, who are both teenagers and are becoming amazing young women.
District 10: U.S. Rep. Michael McCaul, R-Austin
Favorite Thanksgiving dish: My wife Linda’s homemade jambalaya!
What are you most thankful for that happened in the area you represent in the past year?
I’m very thankful for the success my CHIPS for America Act has brought to my district — especially the Austin area. This year, it has spurred hundreds of millions of dollars in investments in Texas, created thousands of new jobs, and continued to cement Texas’ leadership in this crucial technology sector. The Lone Star State is truly leading the charge to protect U.S. national security and boost our economy through semiconductor chips!
What is another thing you’re thankful for that happened in your life this year?
As Foreign Affairs Committee chairman, I had the privilege of meeting Pope Francis in Rome and the Dalai Lama — along with many Tibetan people — in India, two deeply profound and spiritual experiences. The Dalai Lama and his people have faced so much persecution at the hands of the CCP, yet His Holiness continues to preach peace and forgiveness. I hope to take everything I gleaned from these spiritual leaders and use it to become the best leader — and representative for Texas-10 — that I can be.
Recipe: Linda’s homemade jambalaya
Ingredients:
- 2 cups real wild rice; rinsed, cooked in chicken stock, drained.
- Sweet and spicy Italian sausage — every palate is different so do this according to your guests.
- Onion — I combine purple and sweet onion
- Garlic — fresh
- Yellow bell pepper, red bell pepper and orange if you want extra color
Instructions: In a separate pan, sauté sausage. Then combine all ingredients in a large saucepan. Enjoy!!
District 21: U.S. Rep. Chip Roy, R-Hays County

Favorite Thanksgiving dish: Fried okra, cranberry sauce (canned is best!)

Boerne Little League World Series run was special and finally securing a nonstop flight from San Antonio to DCA (Washington, D.C.) for the people of San Antonio.
What is another thing you’re thankful for that happened in your life this year?
Getting time with my 89-year-old grandmother who passed away this past spring.
District 31: U.S. Rep. John Carter, R-Round Rock

Favorite Thanksgiving dish: Turkey and dressing
What are you most thankful for that happened in the area you represent in the past year?
Over $73 million in federal funds came back to Texas 31 in 2024 through my work on the Appropriations Committee. This money helps communities with road improvements, water infrastructure, public safety equipment, higher education opportunities and health care resources. That funding has a direct improvement on the quality of life of my constituents. I’m looking forward to bringing home more wins in the FY2025 bills for Texas’ 31st district in the next couple of months.
What is another thing you’re thankful for that happened in your life this year?
My wife and I have been blessed to spend 2024 as grandparents to seven! Our seventh grandchild was born in late 2023, and my grandkids bring such an immense joy to my life. With all of my kids and grandkids living nearby, I’m incredibly thankful to see them regularly. The holidays are always a full house, and I couldn’t ask for anything better.
Note: U.S. Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas; U.S. Rep. Greg Casar, D-Austin; and U.S. Rep. Lloyd Doggett, D-Austin, did not respond.
