Healthy eating tips for any time of year

Hannaford registered dietician Kara Kilmartin stopped by the 207 studio to share tips for eating better without giving up the foods you love.

PORTLAND, Maine — Whether you’re trying to stick to a New Year’s resolution or you just want to add more healthy habits into your daily life, Kara Kilmartin, a registered dietitian with Hannaford, has some tips and tricks.

First, you need to ask yourself this question: Am I ready to make changes?

“Whether it’s Jan. 1 or Feb. 1 or even in November, you can make changes any time of year,” Kilmartin said.

Those changes don’t have to mean getting rid of the foods you love.

Kilmartin said she sticks to an 80-20 rule. She’s making healthy eating habits 80 percent of the time and using the leftover 20 percent for things like sweets and treats.

“Listen, I love pizza and French fries, too,” Kilmartin said. “So, it’s all about moderation, and it’s telling yourself that you can have things you enjoy.”
