Healthy eating habits for a new year

QUINCY (WGEM) – It’s the start of the new year and many of people are likely motivated by their resolutions to get in shape and stay healthy in 2025.

Local nutritionists said if people want to make changes, go easy and go gradual.

A dietician at Hannibal Regional Hospital said clients who start small with their lifestyle changes and habits have better success than those who make drastic overnight changes or jump on the latest diet fad.

She said it’s important for people not to deprive themselves of the foods they love. For example, it is okay still have that slice of pizza you’re craving, but also add in a vegetable or two for a balanced meal.

“If you feel like you can start drinking more water, you might not be able to do 64 ounces right away, but if you can drink eight ounces before you drink that first cup of coffee in the morning, that’s going to help move that needle and get you closer to your long term goal,” explained Kristy Taylor, dietician and diabetes educator.

Taylor said many Americans are not eating the American Cancer Society’s recommended nine to 11 servings of fruits and vegetables daily. She said adding an extra serving to lunch or dinner is a great starting point.
