Health expert shares how to balance Halloween candy with healthy eating | Health Watch

WISCONSIN (WQOW) – Halloween is less than a week away, and kids are probably already looking forward to indulging in the candy they will get trick-or-treating.  But there are ways to keep that sugar rush in check with healthy eating habits.

According to pediatric nutritionist Camila Martin with UW Health Kids, Halloween is a great time to teach kids about balance and healthy eating.

A lot of it can happen before heading out the door by concentrating on costumes and decorations, and making sure kids have a good meal.

That way they won’t be as hungry when they return from their Halloween adventure.  Once they return, don’t keep their candy under lock and key.

Instead, involve them in when they can eat their candy and how much they can have.

“So agree ahead of time on we can have one to two pieces of candy per day, and here’s the times of day we can have it,” said Martin. “Then they get to choose what pieces of candy they want to have. Whenever we have a piece of candy, we have to pair a healthy snack with them.”

Martin also noted how the holiday can be hard for kids with food allergies so offering non-candy items like stickers or a small toy could help those children enjoy their Halloween, too.
