A British court has sentenced a driver to nearly 12 years in prison after a fatal high-speed crash that followed hours of heavy drinking, in a case that underscores the deadly consequences of reckless driving and impaired judgment.
According to a report by the Daily Mail, 35-year-old Ross Neville spent around five hours drinking heavily in Newcastle city center before getting behind the wheel of his Ford Raptor pickup truck. Alongside him was his friend, 28-year-old Matthew Newton, who would not survive the journey home.
Investigators later established that Neville consumed a mix of pints, shots and spirits over the course of the evening. Despite being clearly over the legal alcohol limit, he chose to drive. CCTV footage and financial records pieced together his movements and provided a detailed timeline of the events leading up to the deadly crash.

As Neville drove out of the city, witnesses and footage captured him operating the vehicle dangerously. He was seen overtaking other vehicles at high speed and driving erratically. Moments before the crash, his truck reached speeds of up to 108 miles per hour on the A69 near Throckley, on the outskirts of Newcastle.
The Ford F-150 Raptor has a top speed of about 114 mph, delivers excellent maneuverability for a full-size pickup thanks to its advanced suspension and wide stance, and can brake from 60 mph to zero in roughly 137 feet, an impressive stopping power for a truck of its size.
Its FOX Dual-Live internal bypass shocks and electronically controlled damping allow the truck to adapt instantly to terrain changes. Handling-wise, it boasts lateral acceleration measured at 0.71 g, which is solid for a heavy pickup.

Unfortunately, the journey ended in disaster when Neville lost control and collided with a metal crash barrier. The force of the crash was catastrophic. Emergency services were not immediately alerted, as Neville fled the scene on foot, leaving his critically injured friend behind.
In a disturbing detail revealed during the investigation, a passing HGV driver stopped at the crash site and spoke with Neville. When asked about the condition of his passenger, Neville reportedly said that his friend was “fine,” despite the severity of the situation. He then left the scene without calling for help.
Matthew Newton, who was from Carlisle in Cumbria, was pronounced dead at the scene. Medical evidence later indicated that his injuries were unsurvivable. However, the court heard that Neville made no attempt to assist him or contact emergency services.

Detectives from Northumbria Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit faced initial challenges, particularly as Neville had left the scene and no immediate breath test was conducted.
However, officers were able to build a strong case using surveillance footage, transaction records, and witness statements to demonstrate the extent of his alcohol consumption and reckless driving.
At Newcastle Crown Court, Neville admitted to charges including causing death by dangerous driving and driving without insurance. He was sentenced to 11 years and 11 months in prison. In addition, he received a seven-year driving ban, which will begin after his release.
Sergeant Greg Huntley, who led the investigation, described the incident as shocking and condemned Neville’s actions both before and after the crash. He emphasized that Neville’s decision to flee the scene and mislead a witness reflected a complete disregard for his friend’s life.
A Family’s Loss and a Judge’s Rebuke
During sentencing, Judge Edward Bindloss was equally critical of the driver’s actions. Addressing Neville directly, he highlighted his failure to act in the moments after the crash. The judge noted that Neville did nothing to help his friend and instead prioritized his own escape, possibly in an attempt to avoid being tested for alcohol.

The victim’s family also shared the profound impact of the tragedy. Matthew’s mother, Anna, spoke emotionally about the loss of her son, describing the day of the crash as the moment her life changed forever.
She spoke of the future her son would never have, including marriage, children, and the fulfillment of his ambitions.
She described Matthew as a kind and vibrant individual who had built a successful business and was deeply loved by those around him. His death has left a lasting void in the lives of his family and friends.
