HAMILTON COUNTY, Fla. (WCTV) – Hamilton County schools are updating their cell phone policy.
At the school board meeting last week, updates to the policy were approved for elementary, middle and high school students.
The new policy states that personal cell phones and other wireless communciation devices can be brought to school under specific conditions.
Elementary and middle school students may not use a wireless communication device during the school day.
High school students can’t use devices during instructional time, except when directed by a teacher for educational purposes. The policy also outlined that the student code of conduct will designated locations in the schools where a high school student can use a device with the permission of a school adminsitrator.
Devices must be silenced during school hours. Previously, phones had to be turned off.
Hamilton County Schools ask that all emergency calls to or from students be placed through the school office rather than the student’s phone.
The policy also states that a student will be allowed to use a device during the school day if it’s included in their indiviualized education plan, their 504 accomodation plan or a doctor’s note certifies that the student needs the use of a device.
A state law went into effect this school year cracking down on cell phone use in public schools.
