Hainan is set to take center stage in Hong Kong this September with a series of high-profile cultural and tourism promotion activities. The Hainan Free Trade Port Tourism and Culture Series will run from September 7 to 11 at the K11 Art Mall, signaling a major push to attract visitors from Hong Kong and beyond to experience the tropical charm of China’s southern island province.
Hong Kong, as a global travel hub with an extensive international flight network, serves as a natural gateway for millions of travelers worldwide. Situated just across the strait, Hainan has emerged as one of China’s premier vacation destinations, celebrated for its pristine beaches, lush landscapes, and rich cultural heritage. The geographical proximity and shared cultural ties between Hong Kong and Hainan have laid a solid foundation for deepening tourism collaboration and creating new growth opportunities for both regions.
Expanding Tourism Ties and Seamless Connectivity
Tourism exchanges between Hainan and Hong Kong have witnessed strong momentum in recent years, with increasing visitor flows and enhanced cooperation initiatives. Both destinations have worked closely to create integrated travel experiences that allow visitors to enjoy the best of both worlds. Earlier this year, a strategic agreement was established to develop “one-trip, multiple-stops” itineraries, designed to offer high-end, diversified, and complementary travel products tailored to international tourists seeking premium experiences.
Hainan is also capitalizing on Hong Kong’s role as a key international connector by significantly boosting air connectivity. Direct flights between Hong Kong and Hainan’s major cities, Haikou and Sanya, have been increased, enabling travelers to move effortlessly from the vibrant urban charm of Hong Kong to the sun-soaked resorts of Hainan. This growing air link is shaping what many call a “one-hour tourism circle,” allowing global tourists to combine both destinations in a single journey with ease.
According to recent data, tourist arrivals from Hong Kong to Hainan have shown remarkable growth. From January to July alone, over 85,000 travelers made the trip, representing a nearly 29% increase compared to the previous year—a clear sign of the strong demand and appeal of this travel partnership.
A Cultural Showcase Highlighting Hainan’s Unique Heritage
The upcoming promotional event at K11 Art Mall promises to be an immersive cultural celebration, blending traditional artistry with modern innovation. Visitors will experience the spirit of Hainan through a diverse range of exhibitions and interactive activities designed to bring the island’s unique identity to life.
Highlights of the event will include:
- Visual Exhibitions: More than 80 meticulously selected photographs will present vivid scenes of Hainan’s natural beauty, cultural vibrancy, and dynamic tourism offerings.
- Cultural Treasures: Close to 200 exhibits will feature globally recognized and nationally protected intangible cultural heritage items such as Li brocade, coconut carving, Miao embroidery, and intricate bamboo weaving.
- Interactive Experiences: Over 10 engaging activities will allow participants to dive deeper into Hainan’s traditions. From martial arts demonstrations and folk performances to artisanal crafts and cultural nail art, the event aims to offer an authentic and memorable experience for every visitor.
Strengthening Cross-Border Tourism Through Policy Support
Hainan’s favorable entry policies further enhance its attractiveness for international travelers. The province offers a visa-free entry for citizens from 86 countries, alongside a 144-hour visa-free policy for foreign tour groups from Hong Kong and Macao and a 240-hour transit visa exemption. These initiatives are designed to streamline travel procedures and create more flexibility for visitors exploring both destinations.
The ongoing efforts between Hong Kong and Hainan go beyond tourism, extending into cultural exchange, sports collaboration, and creative industries. Plans are in motion to develop international art exhibitions, cultural performances, film and broadcasting projects, and large-scale sports events, including martial arts, dragon boat races, and golf tournaments. These integrated initiatives aim to elevate the visitor experience and strengthen the bond between the two regions as they jointly shape a world-class tourism and cultural hub in Asia.
