Gwyneth Paltrow is bringing the messy bun to Milan Fashion Week.

Veering from her trademark straight hair, which is typically combed flat, the Goop founder touched down in Italy on Tuesday morning, modeling the effortless, undone hairdo instead. Her dirty blond hair was pulled back, tucked loosely behind her ears and tied in a low bun on the nape of her neck.

The back of Paltrow’s hair was teased and brushed out, leaving only her ends tangled in the hair tie. The look, a far cry from the sleek style she often sports, heralds a new era in beauty, one that defies the strict parameters of the “clean girl” aesthetic, in which women are expected to appear put together at all times. DJ and pop artist Charli XCX was among the first leaders of the anti-clean girl movement, using her Grammy-winning album, “Brat,” as a harbinger of the grunge-inspired party girl aesthetic last summer.

In August, Jenna Ortega inspired the “tired girl” alternative through the promotion of her hit Netflix series, “Wednesday.” Here, hollowed eyes, pale complexions, bleached or barely there brows and bold lips were encouraged. Influencers soon followed suit with their own iterations. Lara Violetta, a fashion and beauty creator in Paris, confidently smudged murky green shadow around her eyes, dressed her lips in a white pigment and tossed her blush and bronzer to the side.

A gothic renaissance is now budding in beauty, with A-listers such as Ashlee Simpson, Gabby Windey and Taylor Momsen making a case for the moody look on the red carpet at the MTV Video Music Awards. Meanwhile, ratty bangs — like enemies of perfection — are poised to be a top hair trend this fall. Ratty bangs are wispy, tangled, short in the front and combed to the sides, and they blend like longer, face-framing layers would, with no rhyme or reason.
