Grand Designs: ‘Radical’ North East home with tight budget

Grand Designs: 'Radical' North East home with tight budget

The Channel 4 show is now entering its 26th series, with previous episodes seeing everything from giant curved glass homes to mansions built out of clay and former water towers.

Now, more keen builders are ready to take on the task, not for the faint-hearted, as Kevin travels around the UK to see the new builds in Grand Designs.

Kicking off the newest series is artist Sarah, with plans for a ‘radical’ and ‘dramatic’ home on a tight budget.

North East artist takes on ‘radical’ home in Grand Designs

Artist Sarah has spent the last 40 years living in the South East of England, but is ready to return to her North East roots.

With ambitious plans, Sarah hopes to create her dream home on an exposed, three-acre plot that she’s bought at auction in the Durham Dales.

Sarah’s radical home will be a creative hub that combines a studio and gallery for displaying and selling art.

The artist has a budget of £330,00 to create her “super-sustainable” home that will have an exposed interior with a “dramatic earthy look”, according to Radio Times.

However, Sarah’s eight-month schedule that sees her move in before winter is at risk due to her inexperience as a project manager.

Plus, more trouble occurs when material costs rise, seeing her budget stretch and leading Sarah to sell her one-bed holiday cottage.

“She’ll be using the relatively unknown material… hempcrete.”

Grand Designs is on Channel 4 on Wednesday evenings at 9pm and is available to stream on All4.
