SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WBNG) — Governor Kathy Hochul met with school leaders in Syracuse yesterday to discuss her plans for distraction-free schools.
The law requires schools to submit their phone-free plans by Friday, August 1.
Over 400 schools across the state have already submitted these plans.
One of which is the North Syracuse Central District, where Hochul held a round-table talk today.
Hochul explained why a bell-to-bell phone ban is important.
“The students stop communicating, and that’s when they should be getting the opportunity to develop interpersonal relationships, and friendships, and without that distraction, actually speak to other students again,” said Hochul.
The Governor’s guidelines for cell phones come after a year of discussions with students, teachers, parents and school administrators.
Hochul said that across the board, school leaders expressed concerns about excessive phone usage leading to a lack of socialization among students.
