Gemini launched on some Google TV devices back in September, starting with TCL TVs. However, there were questions surrounding the software’s potential launch date on Google’s own hardware – the Google TV Streamer.
We now have some clarification… and it’s unfortunately, the free upgrade could arrive later than you may have hoped.
At the Gemini for Home voice assistant preview (reported by 9to5Google) the tech giant specified that the release window will be “this winter”. That implies either December, January or February.
Prior to this, Google had said that Gemini would arrive on the media box “later this year”, but there’s only one month in that new release window listed – so there’s more chance now that Google TV Streamer owners will have to wait until 2026 for the upgraded voice enhancements.
Android Authority has asked Google for comment on a more specific release date but has not yet had a reply.
Gemini made a surprise debut on Sony Bravia TVs recently, and has also been confirmed to arrive on the following entertainment devices:
- Walmart Onn 4K Pro
- 2025 Hisense U7, U8, and UX TVs,
- 2025 TCL QM7K, QM8K, and X11K TVs
Gemini will replace the Google Voice Assistant, giving users the opportunity for more complex and natural conversations with their TVs. They can also use it for more advanced search features, such as looking for a TV series/film by describing it if they don’t know its name, and searching for content based on specific viewing preferences.
This is not the first time that the Google TV Streamer has been late to the upgrade game. When it first launched in the UK, the BBC iPlayer app was missing for the first six months.
Hopefully the free upgrade will arrive at the start of winter, but we can only wait to find out. The streaming device will also be competing with similar features launching on Roku TV devices in the coming months.
