Trust me, I’ve tried it all. Vaseline between the legs, tights, cycling shorts and even anti-chafe sticks. Some work better than others but overall, wearing a dress or skirt in the summertime without any type of anti-chafe precautions are a nightmare for me.
Recently, while packing for a trip to Morocco, I forgot my trusted cycling shorts, which meant that my boho dress and satin midi skirt didn’t get worn at all. So much do I detested being uncomfortable and chafing that I didn’t even attempt to wear them, instead they stayed rolled up in my suitcase. I spent the entire trip in linen trousers and Bermuda shorts, trusted go-tos that I love equally, but sometimes you just want to get dressed up and look pretty for one evening.
However, I won’t get caught out again, after purchasing a £24.90 skort from Uniqlo. There’ll be no need for me to remember to pack separate shorts as they’re built into this clever short/skirt hybrid, hidden beneath the skirt fabric panel. The old childhood staple – the humble skort – is being re-adopted into my adult wardrobe and has made me fall in love with summer dressing once more.
No longer am pulling my skirt down every third step, paranoid that I’m flashing my underwear to the whole of Trafalgar Square on the way to work. Goodbye, nipping to the loo to reapply Vaseline to reduce the rubbing. Cycling shorts are fantastic for maxi-length skirts and dresses but the skort has helped me fall in love with midi and mini skirts that I’d long thought I couldn’t wear anymore. It’s opened up new styling opportunities and made me feel confident about my legs again. Was my mum right all this time? Is being comfortable the key to confidence?
I’m already formulating my entire summer wardrobe around different skorts. My favourite design comes from AYM’s Studio, its skort is crafted in breathable bamboo fabric and its subtle dropped waist creates a subtle cinching-in effect, plus it even has pockets!!! I’ll be wearing this all festival season, channelling my inner Kate Moss, with welly boots, waistcoat, khaki jacket and belt!
