Global EV battery market share in Jan-Aug 2025: CATL 36.8%, BYD 18.0%

  • CATL and BYD collectively installed 379.3 GWh of EV batteries in January-August 2025, accounting for 54.8 percent of the global total.
  • South Korea’s LG Energy Solution maintained its third-place position with a 9.7 percent share.

Global EV battery market share in Jan-Aug 2025: CATL 36.8%, BYD 18.0%

CATL (HKG: 3750) and BYD (HKG: 1211) continued to dominate the global electric vehicle (EV) battery market during January-August, according to latest data.

Global EV battery installations totaled 691.3 GWh from January to August, a 34.9 percent increase from the 512.6 GWh recorded during the same period last year, according to data released today by South Korean market research firm SNE Research.

CATL’s EV battery installations reached 254.5 GWh from January to August, a 31.9 percent increase from the 193.0 GWh installed during the same period last year.

The Chinese battery giant maintained its position as the world’s top supplier with a 36.8 percent market share during this period, remaining the only battery provider globally with over 30 percent market share.

This share is lower than its 37.7 percent share in January-August 2024 and also below its 37.5 percent share in January-July 2025.

BYD’s EV battery installations reached 124.8 GWh from January to August, a 50.3 percent increase from 83.0 GWh during the same period last year.

The company ranked second with an 18.0 percent share in January-August, up from 16.2 percent in the same period of 2024 and also higher than the 17.8 percent share in January-July 2025.

LG Energy Solution installed 67.4 GWh of power batteries in January-August, a 13.3 percent year-on-year increase.

The South Korean company maintained its third-place position with a 9.7 percent market share from January to August, down from 11.6 percent during the same period last year but higher than the 9.5 percent recorded from January to July 2025.

China’s CALB ranked fourth with a 4.6 percent share, South Korea’s SK On was fifth with 4.2 percent, and Japan’s Panasonic came in sixth with 3.7 percent.

China’s Gotion High-tech, South Korea’s Samsung SDI, China’s Eve Energy, and Svolt Energy ranked seventh, eighth, ninth, and tenth respectively, with market shares of 3.6 percent, 2.9 percent, 2.9 percent, and 2.5 percent during the January-August period.

CATL’s August share increased by 0.95 percentage points compared to July, while BYD’s share decreased by 0.34 percentage points.
