GILBERT, AZ (AZFamily) — Younger students at Gilbert Public Schools will soon have to be off their phones nearly all the time when they go to school.
The GPS Governing Board approved on Tuesday a student code of conduct that includes a ban on cellphones for K-8 students. It means students can’t use the devices at all during the school day, including lunch, passing period and recess.
The new rules go into effect in the fall. There are exceptions during an emergency.
Back in April, Gov. Katie Hobbs signed a bill that calls on Arizona school districts to adopt policies that restrict students’ access to the internet and texting or calling on wireless devices, such as cellphones and tablets.
A 2024 Pew Research survey of high school teachers found that more than 70% view student distraction from cell phones as a “major problem.”
