Confectioners Geraldo’s analysed the latest Gov.uk Family Food data to see which areas of the UK had the biggest cravings for frozen treats. They averaged data over a ten year period from 2012 to the most recent data for 2022 and found the UK enjoys 0.76 litres per person, per week which makes 52,440,000 litres of frozen treats every week.
Scotland topped the tables in all 4 product ranges, with Scot’s consuming 0.2 litres (211.91 ml) of frozen treats per person, per week on average.
As well as national statistics, the data also provided details covering regions in England, which Geraldo’s also analysed.
The South East of England had the highest total consumption, with an average of 199.99ml per person, per week. This was followed by the East of England with 195.73ml and the South West with 194.55ml overall.
The data also showed that the public has a clear preference when it comes to their ice cream, with more being sold in tubs or blocks than the other categories combined.
Nationally, the UK consumes 402.01ml of ice cream in a tub or block per person, per week, in comparison to a combined 363.73ml of products like Choc Ices, Ice Cream Lollies or Ice Cream Cornets.
Toni Dawson of Geraldo’s added her thoughts to the data:
“My family has been selling ice cream in Scotland for 6 decades now, so it’s great to know that the same enjoyment we see from our local customers extends across the whole country.
“It’s interesting to see the clear preference for the classic ice cream tub but I think it shows that ice cream is far from just a treat for a hot day. There’s a comfort and familiarity to it that we can all remember feeling as a child.
“The combined UK average works out to around 2.7 billion litres of ice cream and frozen treats per year, and I think that speaks to the enduring popularity people have for chilled goodies, whether it’s a cone at the seaside, a local van or straight from their own freezer.”
