There have been several sightings of signage and road markings misspelling one of Merseyside’s best-known towns
People in one of Merseyside’s best-known towns are ‘p****d off’ over the misspelling of Kirkby on signage and road markings. There have been several sightings of ‘Kirkby’ being incorrectly spelt, including four mistakes on the M58 junction.
Kim Bradshaw, 22, doesn’t live in Kirkby but was travelling around the Maghull area and noticed the incorrect spelling ‘Kirby’ four times while driving on the roundabout near Maghull Lane, in Sefton. Kim told the Liverpool ECHO: “I think that’s a joke, really.
“I think it’s disgraceful. It’s mistakes that should not be made and should be changed, effective immediately. It just doesn’t look really good in our city that people are living here and working here, and we get these signs that aren’t even spelt right.”
Kim added: “[It’s] absolutely comical. I would love to know what the people of Kirkby think.”
The ECHO was also intrigued and did a bit of research to see if there was more incorrect Kirkby signage and came across the two signs on the roundabout between School Lane and Wango Lane in Aintree – one with the correct spelling and one with the incorrect spelling: ‘KIRBY’.
We posted a photograph of a ‘KIRBY’ road marking on the ‘We Are Kirkby Too’ Facebook group to gauge people’s opinions on the matter. Angela Bon Bangela commented: “The funniest part is there’s a sign right in front of it spelling it correctly.”
Robert Howard wrote: “I moved from Kirkby 55 years ago but it still pi***s me off when people spell it without the K.” Rose Glover Tope commented: “Embarrassing when the council can’t even get the name right.”
Shaun Boland “Kirkby [the town the] council forgot; they can’t be bothered spelling it correctly.” Ash Hair added: “They obviously can’t spell. Deffo not Scousers who’ve done this; you can tell.”
Alan Newhall joked: “That’s no big deal dropping the letter K. Take a drive up the A55 and see how their council has spelt the town of Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch.”
The ECHO approached both National Highways and Sefton Council and understands plans are underway to correct the errors.
