When most of us think about childhood, we imagine safety, stability, and a loving home.
For some children in Cumbria, however, life is far from stable. Many face uncertainty, trauma, or the upheaval of family crises, and it’s during these times that foster carers can make all the difference.
Our new short film, The Run, brings this reality to life. Created in collaboration with over 90 local authority fostering services across the UK, the film follows Tom, an 11-year-old boy, whose need to run away from danger contrasts with his love of running on the athletics track — a symbol of purpose, achievement, and hope. Through Tom’s story, we see how the right support, understanding, and care can transform a child’s life.

Fostering isn’t just about providing a roof over a child’s head. It’s about giving them a sense of safety, stability, and belonging — offering them the chance to thrive despite the challenges they’ve faced. Foster carers provide love and guidance when children need it most. In Cumbria, hundreds of children rely on foster families to support them through difficult times and help them build brighter futures.
Watching The Run is a powerful reminder of the impact fostering can have. It captures both the challenges and the rewards of caring for a child who has experienced trauma, while celebrating the resilience and potential that exists within every young person. Foster carers give children like Tom the opportunity to grow, to heal, and to chase their dreams — on and off the track.
Becoming a foster carer is a deeply personal decision, but it’s one that can change lives forever. It’s not only about helping a child in need; it’s about creating stronger communities and giving children the chance to reach their full potential. Cumbria is always looking for dedicated foster carers who can provide safe, supportive, and loving homes for local children. No matter your background, skills, or experience, there could be a role for you in fostering.
If you’ve watched The Run, we hope it has inspired you to consider fostering and shown you just how meaningful this role can be. Every child deserves a chance to feel safe, valued, and cared for — and every foster carer plays a vital part in making that possible.
