SINGAPORE – Churros is one food trend that, over the years, has come and gone.
Treated more like a dessert than a frequent snack, the fried fritters have never really caught on permanently here.
Hoping to change that is Twist & Buckle, a churro specialist from Hong Kong whose Tsim Sha Tsui outlet has been mentioned in Hong Kong’s Michelin Guide since 2023.
It made its international debut at Velocity @ Novena Square in November 2024 and, based on what I have tried, I certainly hope this one is not a flash in the pan.
The churros – each bent into a loop – are the crispiest I have had in recent memory.
The original churro, dusted in cinnamon and sugar, is priced at $2.50 (mini) or $4.90 (regular). My favourite glazed flavours ($7.50 for two mini churros, $6.90 for one regular churro) are the Pistachio Crunch, Crunchy Matcha topped with Fruity Pebbles cereal and Chocolate Sprinkles with rainbow sprinkles.
Other flavours include Hazel Lah, coated in Nutella and finished with chopped hazelnuts, and Cookies and Cream, topped with Oreo crumbs.
I like that each piece is brushed – not dunked – with the glaze, so it is not too sweet but still coated evenly.
For the full works, go for the Sundae Specials ($7.90), which feature glazed mini churros paired with creamy vanilla milk soft serve.
My pick is the S’Mores Sundae, with a toasted marshmallow churro, Tim Tam biscuit and a generous drizzle of chocolate sauce.
The other standout is the Cookie Monster Sundae, with a churro glazed in a vibrant blue hue, topped with chocolate chip cookies and crunchy chocolate cereal balls.
The party boxes make for a convenient treat at home. They are priced from $17.90 for seven original mini churros and two dips of choice, or from $19.90 for five original churros.
