Welcome to The Mag’s fashion corner! Let’s fall (no pun intended) into this season’s fashion trends. It’s that time of year again to store your bikinis and grab your coziest sweaters. I’m giving you the inside scoop on how to build your wardrobe now that fall is officially in session.
Despite the warmer temps here in Baton Rouge, we do have brisk enough mornings for at least a sweater over the shoulders or a light cardigan.
I recommend holding on to your summer frocks since South Louisiana doesn’t experience drastic seasonal changes. Focus on styling those pieces with fall add-ons. For example, pair boots with denim shorts to give a little fall flair.
Elevate your ensembles a couple of notches by substituting flip flops with chic ballet flats or loafers—both are major trends this season.
As residents of Baton Rouge, we can keep our camisoles, crop tops, and maxi skirts out longer than most cities can due to the warmer climate. But this past week gave us a preview of how it feels when the temperature drops. Coats, hats, scarves, and Uggs made a quick comeback with the recent cold front.
So let’s talk about layers.
Layering is a vital component of creating fall and winter looks. Turtlenecks, tights, boots, and coats—oh my! These are essentials you can rework throughout the next few months.
A lot of trendy, aesthetic pieces to build the perfect wardrobe can be found at Gap. I found great basics like white t-shirts that are perfect for layering. I also saw cropped cardigans, suede bags, trench coats, and comfy sweats for the days you want to be cozy and warm.
There’s even more great shopping close to LSU’s campus.
I recently stopped by Urban Outfitters at Perkins Rowe to find a gift for a friend and left as a happy customer—with a gift secured and the cutest denim skirts for myself. Building a denim collection is a perfect place to start a capsule wardrobe. Denim never goes out of style and works for every season.
A capsule wardrobe is a variety of quality, interchangeable pieces—including basics—that can be worn continuously. Curating one allows you to build a collection of classic pieces you can easily style. It’s also important from a sustainability standpoint. And we’re environmentally conscious around here.
Think quality over quantity.
Some online shops to check out for your fashion staples are MANGO, H&M, Abercrombie, and Nordstrom.
If you have zero luck with those options, clothes swap parties and thrifting can be game changers. The Purple Cow at 3651 Perkins Rd. is a favorite among LSU thrifters. Some of my friends have what I like to call the “thrift touch.” They can walk into any store and leave with a basket full of wins. I don’t exactly have that gift, so I source my vintage straight from my mom’s closet.
Another trend seen on runways and in big cities and small towns alike is fringe. This season, fringe and other western-inspired pieces are everywhere. Easily pair a fringe jacket, boots, or bag with denim and other basics you already own.
The style possibilities are endless. Whether you’re shopping new, thrifting, or swapping, boldly infuse your personality into your fall looks—on any budget.
Until next time!
