The United States imposed another major round of sanctions on six officials in Hong Kong, including the justice secretary and outgoing police chief, over what Washington said was “transnational repression” under the city’s national security legislation.
The move on Tuesday follows previously imposed economic sanctions and other restrictions against the city after Beijing enacted the sweeping national security law in 2020 in response to the months-long social unrest the year before.
Beijing has vowed to retaliate while the Hong Kong government has also slammed US action, saying it will not be cowed by it.
The Post explores who is caught in the crosshairs of the latest round of sanctions, the reasons behind Washington’s decision to impose them, and other restrictive measures against the city.
1. Who is being sanctioned?
Officials targeted in this round included Secretary for Justice Paul Lam Ting-kwok and Commissioner of Police Raymond Siu Chak-yee, who was expected to retire after his term expired on Tuesday.
