Egg prices have fallen significantly from last year’s record highs, easing costs for families preparing Easter baskets and holiday meals this weekend.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt posted on X Friday: “Happy Easter: Egg Prices Are Down 80%.” The message linked to reporting that highlighted year-over-year declines in both producer and retail prices.
According to data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average price for a dozen Grade A large eggs stood at $2.50 in February 2026. That compares with $6.23 per dozen in March 2025, the all-time high, for a drop of roughly 60%. The Bureau of Labor Statistics’ average price data tracks the national figure through the Consumer Price Index.
Citing government figures, the Associated Press reported the same $2.50 February average and confirmed the March 2025 peak. The news service noted the decline makes it easier for consumers to fill Easter baskets and Passover Seder plates.
The number of egg-laying hens nationwide reached 315.8 million (table-egg layers) as of March 1, an 8% increase from the previous year, according to U.S. Department of Agriculture data. Fewer outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza in 2026 allowed flocks to rebuild.
Producer prices fell even more sharply. The producer price index for eggs intended for fresh use dropped 80.4% from February 2025 to February 2026, Breitbart reported. Wholesale shell egg prices reached $0.57 per dozen on April 2, down more than 82% from a year earlier, according to Trading Economics data based on USDA figures.
Retailers in multiple states have already reported lower shelf prices in advance of the holiday. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s latest Egg Markets Overview for late March showed wholesale loose large shell eggs trading between $0.90 and $1.17 per dozen in various regions, confirming the broader downward trend.
The White House Easter Egg Roll, scheduled for Monday, will use an estimated 40,000 real eggs, the AP noted.
