A US intelligence report cited by Radio Free Asia claims that despite President Xi Jinping’s decade-long anti-corruption campaign, his relatives continue to hold significant financial interests tied to both private and state-owned Chinese enterprises.
Beijing | March 26, 2025 — A recent report from the US Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI), cited by Radio Free Asia (RFA), has raised eyebrows globally. According to the findings, Chinese President Xi Jinping’s relatives allegedly maintain millions of dollars in business ventures and financial assets, even as the country remains under one of the most aggressive anti-corruption drives in modern history.
Xi’s anti-corruption campaign—launched in 2012 and dubbed the fight against “tigers and flies”—has seen the ousting of over hundreds of thousands of officials. However, the US-backed ODNI report suggests that deep-seated systemic issues, such as centralized authority, lack of independent oversight, and provincial-level opacity, have allowed politically connected individuals to continue amassing wealth.

The report highlights how political status in China, especially roles within the National People’s Congress (NPC), can provide privileged access to state assets, sensitive information, and lucrative opportunities. It also outlines how NPC membership is often secured through bribes, which are later recovered—and multiplied—through illicit financial dealings during or after service.

Despite China’s ongoing push for clean governance, the ODNI warns that wealth accumulation via political influence remains rampant, with some officials earning four to six times more than their official salaries through corrupt practices.
These revelations may further strain already tense US-China relations and raise concerns over transparency and accountability in China’s ruling elite.
